The tropics are rich in wildlife, and Malaysia is no exception! There’s a bunch of scattered all across the country that lets you see these animals up close, and we’ve compiled them right here, so go ahead and take a look!

Orangutan

Bukit Merah Orang Utan Island Foundation

Location: Perak

An icon of Malaysian wildlife, orangutans are always a must-see when travelling around Malaysia! Usually one would have to go all the way to Borneo, but here in Peninsular Malaysia, tucked away on an island in the Bukit Merah lake, a group of dedicated people have devoted their careers towards protecting these majestic endangered animals. A visit here is not just a way to see them up close, but also a way to contribute towards their continued conservation.

Bears

Malaysian Sun Bears in Sandakan

Location: Sabah

As their name suggests, The Bornean Sun bear is indigenous to the Borneo region. As they are an endangered species, the Sun Bear Conservation Centre was created helps to keep these endangered animals alive and thriving, and their efforts are on full display for any visitors who’d like to see these small bears up close.

Turtles

Green Sea Turtles in Redang Island

Location: Terengganu

When one thinks of the east coast of Malaysia, images of green sea turles come to mind. These endangered turtles, their eggs once seen as a delicacy, are now protected and can be seen swimming freely along the coast of several islands. Redang Island is one of them, and you can take part in a private tour that lets you snorkel and see them up close!

Elephants

National Elephant Conservation Centre

Location: Pahang

Elephants are nature’s intelligent, gentle giants. Over in Pahang, conservation efforts are taking place to protect these wonderfully gigantic animals, so you can come over and see them for yourself! You’ll even get the chance to feed baby elephants, so give it a shot!

Birds

Birdwatching in Langkawi

Location: Kedah

Between November and April, over 267 species of birds can be found flying around the Langkawi archipelago. During this time, one third of the bird population are migrant birds, so you’ll get the opportunity to see a variety of birds for yourself, a significant portion of which are not native on the island!

Birdwatching in Belum Temenggor

Location: Perak

The forests surrounding huge inland lake of Belum Temenggor is home to a whole ecosystem of different birds, being home to 316 species that include Blue-banded Kingfishers, Straw-headed Bulbuls, and even the easily-recognizable hornbill. It’s an area of immense natural beauty, and the avian wildlife is an extension of that.

Ostriches

Ostrich Farm in Port Dickson

Location: Negeri Sembilan

When one thinks of Malaysia, ostriches probably aren’t the first thing that come to mind. However you can in fact see them and even race against them! PD Ostrich Farm is a place with a smattering of different attractions, from a model dinosaur park to even a cat cafe, but their main highlights are the ostriches! Not only can you meet them up close, but you can also sprint and race alongside them! It’s a place that really gets you truly involved with their animals, and it’s definitely worth trying out!

Gombak Horse Riding Club

Location: Selangor

Horse riding is well-known past time worldwide, however it has usually been an incredibly expensive affair. However, the folks at Gombak Horse Riding Club aim to make it accessible for the general public, with prices for their 15 minute trial of horse riding starting at RM35. Anyone and everyone can join in, and we highly recommend that you take part!

Cat Cafe in Bukit Jalil
