Water is terrifying

How the f*** do I even start to get over it?

I’m gonna be real with you, I used to be terrified of the water, and admittedly I still am, just a little bit. But the hurdle of getting over that fear was so worth it because it basically unlocked a whole suite of activities I could do! Helped me create new memories that I genuinely cherished. I wanted to share my journey

A bad taste of water

Where my fear came from

I used to walk on the shallow end of the pool all the time, just splashing water around with my bootleg Transformers toy that turned into a boat with a working propeller. I couldn’t even fathom putting my head underwater, the panic of not being able to breathe was real.

I think it really hit me hardest when I went down a waterslide and some kid hit me from the back, pushing my head into the water with my eyes open. It was painful and terrifying, so I had completely written off swimming right from the get go.

The first step I took to overcome my fear of water was learning how to swim. Though to be frank, it was less me wanting to take a step on my own volition and more my dad signing me up for the class without me knowing lol.

But honestly bless his heart, because it genuinely did help me build water confidence. I think the biggest mistake I did was being scared before anything bad even happened. In reality if you just hold your breath now like for 5 seconds. One, two, three, four, five. There, that’s how holding your breath underwater is like, just that the real thing makes you wet is all.

MY EYES

THEY’RE BURNING

Whoever invented swimming goggles, I owe you big time. Even til this day for the life of me I cannot open my eyes underwater. I guess it’s a fear that’s too great for me to get over. But goggles have helped me considerably, removing the one hurdle I couldn’t get over. It made me love swimming, because now with the skills I had and the confidence I had built, I can now swim freely without any worries whatsoever. The water wasn’t there to hurt me, it was just another medium for me to move in. That realization is obvious to some, but to me it was absolutely liberating.

The doors have opened

I can do anything!

From that point on a whole slew of activities were made available to me! And it’s been an incredible experience to be able to take part in things that child-me would’ve been terrified of. I went island hopping with my friends across Langkawi, swimming in sea just off the coast! I went snorkeling with my sister, seeing through the beautiful waters of Sabah. And even now as I’m older there’s still things I want to try! I have a few things I want to do, and if you want to join along and try them too, I’d highly recommend them! We only live once, so let’s not live being afraid of the water!
