Got a birthday coming up? An anniversary? Or some sort of celebration?

What gift do I get?

I hope this title didn’t just remind you that a gift is due soon (I don’t blame you, I forget birthdays sometimes too), but regardless I’m here to help! Let’s just cut to the chase, first off you’ll need to narrow down your search.

What does the giftee like? We’ll dive into the details later but first, get a general idea of what you think suits their tastes. Are they into fashion? Cooking? Maybe they like adventure? (*cough cough* visit yolo.my for experiences). Narrow it down to some specific topics and/or fields and that’ll make it easier to choose what to get.

What kind of shopping do they do?

Utility or passion purchases?

Not all gifts are the same (obviously) but specifically I want to talk about the nature of the gift! I like to separate it into 2 categories:

Utility gifts

Utility gifts are things that can provide practical uses for the giftee. For example, it could be a new pair of prescription glasses that can help them see while looking stylish, or a special pan they can use that can make cooking easier. Anything that can help with their day to day lives would fall under this category.

Passion gifts

Passion gifts are things that don’t necessarily provide any real world use, but it could be something they love to have. Music boxes, fancy watches, paintings, etc are not gonna make their life easier, but it can add value and meaning instead for their day to day.

Know which category your giftee is in, and then plan accordingly.

Figure out the budget

How much is too little or too much

Okay I know this sounds a lot like a cop-out answer, but it honestly depends on you and the giftee. How close are you two? Are you doing well financially? Would paying more money for a gift make them appreciate it more? These are all questions you need to ask yourself and find an answer too. I don’t have an equation that can determine this, it depends entirely on how you view your relationship with the giftee. One advice I CAN give is that you shouldn’t feel like a gift HAS to be expensive for them to appreciate. It’s not about prices, it’s about the thought. How much research you did to find what they like, the effort it took to get it/make it, that is what counts.
